Delhi, India. Jan-Feb 1991 : Freshman year in college and all ganged up with my friend Kartik (who later went on to front Gravy Train, one of the top Delhi bands in the mid 1990’s) to form a band we called Grass. Ha! Kartik did vocals , I tried a stab at rhythm & lead. There were Suhas on drums, Kim on lead guitar and Samson on bass.We entered a rock competition during the Oasis fest at BITS Pilani in Feb 1991. We worked down stuff like Judas Priest’s Living After Midnight, Pink Floyd’s Mother, Status Quo’s Rocking All Over The World, Kiss’s Heaven On Fire and Police’s Every Breath You Take. The competition had an elimination round where one track had to be a Judges’ Choice. We were okay with that but hoped they wouldn’t want us to do Every Breath because , see ,we couldn’t manage the bridge section.
We began great with Living After Midnight. I was excited as it was a rare number I could sort of play the full solo on. ( Well as excited as I could be anyway in the tightest , daftest jeans I’ve ever worn in my life , a sleeveless shirt in that freezing Rajasthan winter and boots that weighed more than me). We get to the bridge that leads to the solo. “I’m aimin’ for ya” Kartik screams. Dhandhandhandhan Dhan Dhan Dhanan our power chords refrain. “Aaaawwll night long” Kartik shrieks. I launch into guitar solo pose. I play the first note.
And twang the effing first string breaks!
The rest of the song is a blur. But a couple tracks later the judges hand out their request.
And, no shit, its Every Breath You Take.
The end. We 're out of it. (To be fair , we’d have been out of it anyway I guess. )
No probs though, as the next couple of days were spent not unpleasantly thank you .There was plenty of stuff to do,consuming our name not least! Other mentionable highlights I remember includes providing very loud audience commentary when my friend Gaurav was on stage acting in a play. That couldn’t have gone down too well but here’s Gaurav now , he’s done that cartoon up on top this post.
And then there was a great band from Chennai (or Madras then?) that eventually went on to win the competition. They were called Shakuni And The Birds Of Prey and they did a mind blowing cover of Steely Dan’s Bodhisattva. Never heard of them again. If anybody has any, er, stuff on that band be great to know.

ReplyDeletegreat storytelling of yet another 'rock n roll suicide', Bhaskar
Funny you should mention Shakuni + Birds of prey - they've been my bestest desi band gig - bass, guit, drums, and how they played Rush. I often talk about them, tho nobody seems to know abt them. Thot they was Bangalore.
ReplyDeleteCheers m
Thanks Meraj - yeah great sketchwork isnt it , been telling gaurav to do more of this stuff, he's quite awesome !
ReplyDeleteNaked - Yeah they were really a big part of Oasis that year werent they....u know, i guess they must have been a one-off ensemble from that college for that fest rather than being a regular band..no one seems to have hearda them.Thot they was Chennai
Wonder what they thot - were they of this earth
ReplyDeleteHey, this is the drummer from Shakuni. Prasanna was the guitarist with Stephen Alberts on bass, Jaideep on second guitars n maybe Vishy on vocals and Horny on keys (last 2 are IIT bestowed names, don't know what happened to them).
ReplyDeleteJaideep and I still play in a band in Chennai called 7even. Prasanna and I are back working together on the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music (sam.org.in). I just got back from managing a 4 city tour of VICTOR WOOTEN and Prasanna to launch admissions to SAM.
So we're very much around. Will be glad to get in touch: shyam@sam.org.in or http://www.facebook.com/shyamdrum?ref=profile. Check out the school and the faculty, we are going to party...err play harder than ever.
Hi , i only just saw your comment. I'm SO glad to hear from you ! Its just unbelievable , the power of the internet ...We were all really impressed with your band , it was awesome.. But man , after all these years and amidst all that smoke and haze at the event ,i was almost starting to believe we were all imagining it all , so great to hear from you! Did you guys carry on with Shakuni much after that ? Would be great to hear from you..anyway , shall mail you separately - cheers ,and rock on !
ReplyDeleteHey Bhaskar, Shakuni died a natural death with almost everyone leaving to the US post 1992/93....correction, make that everyone. Really glad that someone still remembers us! It was a very special band for me and I still think it was a turning point in my life as a drummer.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of doing a reunion show at the end of the year with at least 80% of Shakuni attending. Will see if it pans out. Maybe in IIT Madras - OAT or something would be nice.
- Cheers,
Shyam
